Green jobs initiative: MOU signed between BMET and Grameen Shakti

ILO-Dhaka Press Release - 16 September 2009

In support of the government’s current efforts for expansion of renewable and clean energy, the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) and Grameen Shakti signed a Memorandum of Understanding for training of solar technicians on 16 September 2009.

The MOU is a good example of public-private partnerships between the two agencies for promotion of renewable energy in Bangladesh and is linked to ILO’s green jobs initiative.

BMET, a government department, is engaged in human resource development through skills training in different employable trades through its Technical Training Centres for domestic and overseas jobs.

“Grameen Shakti”, a sister concern of Grameen Bank, is a “not for profit company”. It is a leading Renewable Energy Service Provider in Bangladesh and has so far installed more than 225,000 Solar Home Systems. Every month, 12-15 thousand new solar home systems are being installed by Grameen Shakti and other 15 organizations. This has created good demand for new skills and opened up the avenues for thousands of new green jobs for Bangladesh.

Support to this training is being provided by ILO through its green jobs initiative. ILO will work with BMET and Grameen Shakti for skills training for solar energy technicians including development of curricula, training of trainers, and post-training follow up service.

The MOU was signed between Md Hazrat Ali, Director General In-charge of BMET and Mr Deepal Barua, Managing Director of Grameen Shakti at the Conference Room of BMET at Kakrail, Dhaka. Ms Panudda Boonpala, Director, ILO Dhaka and other ILO officials were present at the signing ceremony.
