The primary objective of the meeting is to gain political commitment and strengthen the partnership between the ILO and its tripartite constituents of workers, employers and government for the implementation of the Decent Work Country Programmes for Pacific Island Countries. Over the course of the meeting participants will work to identify constraints and opportunities to full implementation of the Decent Work Country Programmes, particularly in light of the global economic crisis and climate change. The meeting will also consider and aim to agree on a Regional Implementation Plan for decent work in the Pacific.
All of the four strategic objectives below will be promoted as the meeting will discuss an integrated Decent Work approach to the global economic crisis and sustainable recovery in PICs on the basis of the Decent Work Country Programmes for Pacific Island Countries.
- Promote and realize fundamental principles and rights at work;
- Create greater opportunities for women and men to secure decent employment and income;
- Enhance the coverage and effectiveness of social protection for all; and
- Strengthen tripartism and social dialogue.
