UNFCCC COP21 ONE UN High-Level Roundtable: Human Mobility & Climate Change

The ILO Labour Migration Branch has been working closely with ILO Green Jobs, the lead unit in the build-up to COP21 in Paris, particularly on the critical issue of migration in the context of climate change and environmental degradation. Climate change is seen as the upcoming major catalyst for human mobility, creating significant implications for countries and regions affected in terms of hosting these migratory flows and meeting increasing and diverse needs and expectations. The ILO is especially concerned at the potential impact on labour markets and livelihoods in countries of origin, transit and destination and the importance of labour market governance and social dialogue in this context.

This high-level roundtable will bring together participants from governments, UN agencies and other organisations to discuss human mobility in all its forms in the context of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) process. Adopting a human mobility perspective will ensure that all stakeholders address policy development and reform through a common lens comprising human rights, climate adaptation, migration and displacement, sustainable development, decent work and job creation. This event aims to support and inform the negotiations but also longer term discussions following the conclusion of COP21.
