Taiwan turns plastic junk into blankets, dolls

TAIPEI: Some 40 people stand ankle-deep in used plastic bottles in the yard of a recycling station in Taipei, stamping them flat in the first step of a process that will transform the junk into usable goods. At the station operated by Taiwan’s largest charity group Tzu Chi Foundation, hundreds of volunteers help sort and recycle plastic waste along with used glass bottles and electronic appliances.

Asia - Pacific countries call for intensified efforts to create green jobs initiatives - Surabaya conference

SURABAYA (ILO News): Government, employer and worker representatives from ten countries in the Asia-Pacific region have called for intensified efforts through social dialogue to promote the creation of “green jobs” – and the greening of existing jobs – as critical steps in the pursuit and advancement of socially-inclusive low carbon, climate-resilient, environmentally-friendly economic development.

Population growth, climate change drive need for urban rethink

AlertNet, Amantha Perera, 27 June 2012 - Experts, UN officials and activists spoke of how the world’s bulging urban population will need a bigger share of resources and attention. If the bulk of the world’s urban population remains poor and locked out of the development processes, stresses will multiply, they said. And changing climate patterns, they added, are likely to exacerbate the problems cities and their residents face. Asia, in particularly, will have to take action quickly as it is poised to see the largest urban growth in coming decades.
