Is Going Off-Grid Really More Sustainable?

It seems to be the common view that when it comes to providing domestic housing with more sustainable forms of energy, that off-grid, decentralised production is a more environmental option. However it leads me to think that this is more a ideological view, a way of “sticking in to the man,” of not allowing the large corporations the power they want. It feels like it has been adopted from the grassroots environmentalism of small, self sustaining communities. The world consists of high density urban areas, areas that due to their huge impact arguably provide the best opportunity to make a difference.

Tata Power's Mundra UMPP creates sustainable livelihood for fishermen in Gujarat

In line with its philosophy of improving the quality of life of the communities living around its area of operation, Coastal Gujarat Power (CGPL), a 100 percent subsidiary of Tata Power operating the 4,000MW Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project, installed solar boat lights for the fishermen community from Modhva in Mundra's Mandvi block.

World's first solar plane to fly across US

HOUSTON: A first of its kind ultra-lightweight plane powered completely by the sun is set to fly coast-to-coast this spring. The Solar Impulse plane will stop in Dallas city in Texas during its historic cross-country journey that begins on May 1, its creators announced today. The plane, which requires zero fuel and relies solely on solar panels and battery power, would be the world's first plane powered purely by solar energy.

Portable Solar Power “Flower” Folds Up Like A Lotus

Biomimicry run amok can be a beautiful thing, and that’s the driving force behind a new portable solar power canopy called Lotus Mobile.
