Bringing green energy and green jobs to Bangladesh
The majority of homes in Bangladesh aren't connected to the national electricity grid. This is particularly true in rural areas away from the main transmission lines. Many homes and shops rely on environmentally unfriendly diesel generators. But the government has been working with the ILO, social partners and civil society groups to train rural people in solar power use. This combines an economic and social need with green jobs' skills and creates entrepreneurial opportunities through the installation and maintenance of solar homes systems. The work is supported by the Australian Government - ILO Partnership Agreement (2010-2015). Allan Dow of the ILO's Regional Partnerships Unit (Asia-Pacific) reports from Bangladesh.
