Expert warns govt. to mull fuel restriction plan carefully

The Jakarta Post, 23 April 2012 - Energy observer Pri Agung Rakhmanto warned the government to be more careful in mulling its fuel restriction plan. The statement was made following the government’s plan to issue stickers that would differentiate which cars that were eligible for subsidized fuel.

Energy observer Pri Agung Rakhmanto warned the government to be more careful in mulling its fuel restriction plan.

The statement was made following the government’s plan to issue stickers that would differentiate which cars that were eligible for subsidized fuel.

"Stickers can be easily falsified. In fact, it would be better for them to just restrict fuel by distinguishing between different engine capacities,” Pri said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

“For example, a car with more than 1,500 cc or 2,000 cc may be prohibited from buying subsidized fuel products.”

Pri added that using different colored license plates could be an alternative because license plates were not easily falsified.

However, Downstream Oil and Gas Regulator BPH Migas official Ibrahim Hasyim said that likely the government would use stickers to differentiate the cars that were eligible for subsidized fuel due to the short time frame.

"Due to the short time frame we have to work with, we will be using stickers," Ibrahim said.

The government is now reviving a plan to limit sales of subsidized fuel to ease the strain on the state budget cost following last month’s failure to secure the House of Representatives’ approval for the government’s plan to raise fuel prices.
